Laser Surgery
Commonwealth Veterinary Hospital is pleased to be able to offer Laser Surgery to our clients. Laser surgery is an exciting new development in veterinary medicine that offers many advantages over traditional surgical methods.
What is a Laser?
A Laser is a device that generates a precisely focused beam of light. Commercially, they are found in everything from DVD players to home security systems. Medical lasers are intense enough to cut, seal or vaporize tissue with a level of precision that is not possible using traditional surgical tools. Laser Surgery has been used successfully on humans for over thirty years. Recent advances in veterinary medicine mean that we can now offer Laser Surgery for your pet. It is an exciting new option for safer, more comfortable treatment and is available with many of our procedures.
Why Laser Surgery?
We recommend Laser Surgery for several reasons:
- Less Pain
The laser seals nerve endings as it "cuts". As a result, your pet will experience less pain and will be more comfortable when the operation is over. - Less Bleeding
The tissue that makes up our bodies and those of our pets is lined with a network of very small blood vessels. Using traditional surgical methods, many of these are cut open during the procedures. The laser seals these small blood vessels during surgery, reducing the amount of bleeding. This speeds many procedures and cuts the time your pet needs to be under anesthesia, reducing the risk of post-surgery complications. - Less Swelling
Laser energy does not crush, tear or bruise tissue. This speeds the healing process for your pet. - Reduced Risk of Infection
As the laser removes diseased tissue, it seals the skin and reduces the amount of bacteria present, reducing the risk of an infection developing after the operation is complete. - Precision
The laser can remove unhealthy tissue while minimizing adverse affects to the healthy tissue surrounding it. - A Quicker Return to Normal Activities
Thanks to all of the factors listed above, your pet will heal faster and be back to his or her usual self faster than would otherwise be possible.
If your pet is in need of surgery, we encourage you to consider Laser Surgery. Our veterinarians would be happy to answer any questions you may have and explain the procedure in greater detail.
